Going Home For the Holidays

How to manage the transition between home and college

Amanda Siegel

Going home for the holidays, whether it's your first winter break or your senior year, can evoke a variety of emotions. Although for a lot of people winter break is a much needed escape from the academic and emotional stresses of college, going home for an entire month is a source of anxiety for many. Between the angst about seeing old friends you fear you might not connect with anymore, conflicts with family that come out in close quarters, or simply the stark difference in environments, things can get STRESSFUL. Though there are many things about going home for breaks that you can’t control, there are a few things you can keep in mind to make the transition as seamless as possible.

Enjoy the things that are comfortable and familiar.
Go to your favorite restaurant or coffee shop from home. Your environment and relationships may be a bit different now, but that doesn’t mean you can’t indulge in some old favorites. Staying in your comfort zone isn’t always a bad thing.

Accept that things with your friends might not be the same as they were in the past.
College is a time where people change and discover themselves, meet more people, and find new interests. You and your friends might not share the exact same world anymore but that's OKAY. Learn about what's happening in their lives at school. Showing interest is crucial, don’t complain about things not being the same, get excited about what's new.
Let your family in on your college experience.
It's important to share things with your family, especially over the holidays. By opening up to them and letting them get a glimpse of your life at school they’ll feel included in that world. Talk to them about your classes, share with them a project or paper you’re proud of, or tell them a story about you and your friends from school.

Approaching going home for the holidays with these three things in mind should help create a sense of normalcy and hopefully will ease some anxiety. Remember to enjoy your time off and don’t worry, BU grade deflation will be waiting for you when you get back!
